Volunteer
- Many community groups and organizations working to study and protect our shared waters rely on volunteers. Channel your love for being outside into efforts that will make a difference!
Nature Groupie
- Nature Groupie can help you find short term, hands-on volunteer opportunities, such as planting marsh grass at a restoration site or studying oysters in and around Great Bay.
UNH Marine Docents
- UNH Marine Docents are a team of locals who receive training to lead marine educational programs in schools, libraries and other venues around the Seacoast area.
Great Bay Discovery Center
- Great Bay Discovery Center volunteers help lead school field trips, monitor salt marshes, host training workshops and steward our gardens and lands round Great Bay. You can volunteer every week or for just a few hours when you have time.
Sea Grant
- Sea Grant's Coastal research Volunteers Program creates opportunities for you to participate in meaningful coastal science and stewardship projects, including shoreline and wildlife monitoring and dune and oyster restoration.
The Nature Conservancy
- The Nature Conservancy's Oyster Restoration Volunteer Program is looking for people just like you to help rebuild New Hampshire’s historic oyster reefs. Since 2006, local residents have raised nearly 300,000 oysters off their docks, moorings and boats.
Seacoast Science Center
- Seacoast Science Center volunteers play an essential role in advancing the Center’s mission to inspire conservation of our Blue Planet. Engage, get energized, and have a blast with them!
The Blue Ocean Society
- The Blue Ocean Society relies on volunteers to advance their marine research, stewardship, and education programs.
Gundalow Company
- Gundalow Company volunteers educate the community about the Piscataqua Region’s maritime heritage and environment; they also get to serve as deckhands on the iconic Piscataqua.
Connect to Protect
- This regional partnership is putting New Hampshire's Coastal Watershed Conservation Plan to work to protect our most important lands and natural resources, while balancing the need for economic growth and development. Their website offers many ways for you to collaborate and take action.

Every day decisions that impact our waters are made by local government.

Joining a local commission or board is one of the most effective ways to ensure your voice is heard in the conversation about clean water and land conservation—and it can be rewarding! Powered by local residents, these groups focus on important issues like land stewardship, sustainability, climate, energy, and more. Here are some resources to help you get started:

Join a planning board
- One way to help shape the growth of your community in a sustainable way is to serve on a local land use planning board or commission. In many towns and cities, these groups help inform policy and decisions about development and land use. Now what New Hampshire has resources to help you explore this opportunity.

Join a conservation commission
- Conservation commissions support the protection of critical habitats, water resources, and natural areas in their communities. Depending on the town or city, they support the purchase of land and conservation easements, they provide educational programs to the public, and they manage town land for timber production, recreation, and wildlife. The New Hampshire Association of Conservation Commissions is a treasure trove of information for active conservation commission members and those interested in joining.

We need your voice to help protect the waters that connect us all.

Through the Great Bay Changemaker Bootcamp, you'll learn about our region’s environmental challenges and how to use your voice to create positive change in your community. Along the way, you’ll connect with local leaders, explore the area, and learn about practical actions you can take to have a lasting impact! Learn more about this program here.

Local nonprofits provide another way us to work together for the common good.

Local nonprofits are often embedded in communities and understand their needs best. Our region is lucky to have so many nonprofit organizations working to protect our waterways, educate children and community members, conserve land, and address climate change. These organizations depend on individual and foundation support to do their important work. Many of them are partners in the Seven Rivers to the Coast website.

There are many ways to reduce or eliminate pollution.

Businesses, communities, and governments can help stop pollution before it starts by adopting sustainable engineering designs and production practices, using non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques, and re-using materials rather than putting them into the waste stream.

The New Hampshire Pollution Prevention Program (NHPPP) can help you implement strategies that protect our waters and save money. These could include reducing the size of your parking lot, planting a rain garden on site to manage stormwater, or utilizing proper snow and ice removal techniques.

PREP’s Stormwater Toolkit is a free online resource to help communities in Maine, New Hampshire, and beyond talk about stormwater in clear and engaging ways. Inside you’ll find 80+ ready-to-use assets—social posts (branded or unbranded), short videos, graphics, text, and images.

Other helpful organizations include the University of New Hampshire's Stormwater Center and the N.H. Department of Environmental Services Living Shorelines initiative.

In New Hampshire’s Great Bay, buffers play an important role in protecting human property and infrastructure as well as habitats and wildlife.

A buffer is a naturally vegetated segment of land directly upslope of a water resource, such as a lake, stream, river, pond, estuary, or other wetland type.

Healthy, intact buffers help keep our water clean and our basements dry while also protecting natural resources. They do this by moderating some of the major stressors that impact our region’s water bodies, such as rising groundwater, rising sea levels, extreme storms, and habitat loss.

Buffer Options for the Bay (BOB) is an informational resource that collects and integrates the best available information on buffers. BOB resources are intended to support policy and land use decisions involving buffers in the region, and are available online for free.

Shoreline Vegetated Buffer Cost-Share Program

The Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA) is offering a financial incentive program that will help keep the lake clean and healthy, as well as beautify your property. By planting native (local) shrubs, trees, and plants along the shoreline, homeowners can create a buffer that slows down rain runoff and filters out dirt and pollutants before reaching the lake. See the Shoreline Vegetated buffer information page for more information on the benefits of buffers and commonly asked questions.

Funding for the Shoreline Vegetated Buffer Cost Share Program was provided to AWWA by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation Great Bay 2030 Initiative. The funding is restricted to lakes and ponds affiliated with AWWA within the Salmon Falls Watershed, which is a part of the larger Great Bay Watershed.

It’s all about exploring the success stories of our source water collaborative and sharing your experiences to inform the Salmon Falls River Watershed Management Plan. The Salmon Falls Watershed Collaborative coordinates long-term source water protection efforts among planning commissions, land trusts, watershed associations, non-profits, water systems, and town, state and federal agencies in New Hampshire and Maine.

8th Annual Fall River Paddle

The “Fall Paddle” returns for a eighth year! The Exeter River is a town treasure running through the middle of Brentwood. A pristine river with an abundance of wildlife, much of the land along the river has been conserved, resulting in very little development along its shores and a very natural experience. Whether you are a frequent paddler on the river, or have never been out on it, we hope you will consider joining in.

Departs: River Access Stairs – Rowell Road West
Destination: Pickpocket Dam
Saturday September 26th
Start time: 10:00 AM
Rain or shine within reason.
No Cost, BBQ Lunch Provided
Life Jacket for each participant required

BYOB* (Bring Your Own Boat – canoe, kayak, or paddle board) *no power/electric boats
Participants will check in at the Rowell Rd. entry and must show proof of life vests. The paddle will proceed downriver to the Pickpocket Dam at Cross Rd. (about 1 hour paddle). A lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs will be served, along with info on keeping the river healthy. From there participants may paddle back up river (very little current), or transportation will be available to drive those not wishing to do the return paddle back to Rowell Rd.

***Brentwood has several canoes and kayaks available to borrow (the event is open to anyone, but loaner boats are for town residents only). Boats must be picked up at the boat launch on the day of and participants must transport them to and from the river. Please email recreation@brentwoodnh.gov to reserve a boat in advance and to arrange a time for pick up / drop off***

This event is a collaboration between the Brentwood Recreation Department and the Exeter Squamscott River Local Advisory Committee.

BioBlitz is Seacoast Science Center’s annual dawn-to-dusk biological survey of Odiorne Point State Park. Families and nature enthusiasts team up with SSC naturalists and guest experts to explore the Park’s habitats to find and identify as many different species as possible in just one day! BioBlitz is a great way to get kids (and adults!) excited about science, learn about biodiversity, and discover how you can help protect our natural world.

Like an extreme nature scavenger hunt, BioBlitz offers many opportunities for all ages to gain knowledge and hone skills in their favorite areas of nature! Habitat, plant, and animal explorations are scheduled throughout the day, allowing participants to choose among activities that interest them the most. With seven distinct natural habitats to survey, there’s something for everyone!

SSC’s Greg Interactive Learning Studio serves as the BioBlitz home base and is the field lab for the day. Here, you can observe some of the smallest species through microscopes, see amazing images of finds from years past, learn about the species identification process, and connect with scientists and expert naturalists.

In 2024, we found a total of 426 species, 14 of which were new to our list! That brings the total number of species identified since our first BioBlitz in 2003 to 2,402. This valuable catalog serves as a snapshot of the biodiversity of our region. Your participation and contributions to our data set will not only help us monitor biodiversity, but will also help us provide countless educational opportunities for school children, families, and groups.

The Portsmouth Farmers’ Market takes place in the City Hall parking lot overlooking the South Mill Pond. Up on a hill and close the the ocean this market usually has a consistent and comfortable breeze, even on the hottest summer days. The Durham Farmers’ Market takes place at the M&T Bank parking lot right off of Main Street. Located to the left of the 2025 market location, this market is a central location to downtown Durham. Whether you’re on campus or in town this market is a great way to spend part of your Monday afternoon. Take a ride to visit the market and surrounding local businesses. Please note there will be no market on Labor Day.

When & Where: The market runs every Monday from the first week of June to the first week of October at Durham’s M&T Bank located at 70 Main Street. Hours are 2:30-6pm. Listen for the bell that opens and closes each market!

Vendors: To see which vendors will be at the market each week click here to view our interactive market map. Please note the map will also display dates for the Portsmouth, Exeter, and Dover markets. Click the drop down menu and select the date of the Durham market you would like to see vendors for. See the photo gallery below to get a look at many of our vendors!

Restrooms: A public restroom is not available.

Animals: Animals are welcome at this market.

Sit & Eat: Enjoy a picnic in the shaded grassy area near the market or use a nearby picnic table or bench.

Parking: Shoppers can park on any street space surrounding the market area, as well as town parking lots within walking distance of the market (please note street parking and lots are metered).

Activities & Engagement

Live music: Local musicians perform at every market.

SNAP/EBT: SNAP (formerly know as food stamps) is accepted as a payment method at this market. Visit the Market Info booth to get SNAP tokens and we will match you dollar for dollar with Granite State Market Match!
