Hit the Decks, Love the Water

By: Brianna Gleason, 7 Rivers to the Coast

There’s something about early May on the Seacoast, the light lingers a little longer, the breeze carries hints of salt and river, and suddenly, everything feels alive again. On Thursday, May 7, Portsmouth kicks off that energy with one of its most beloved traditions: Hit the Decks.

It’s more than just the unofficial start to summer. It’s a celebration of the places, people, and waterways that make this region so special.

As you plan your evening—deck hopping, enjoying live music, and soaking in waterfront views—we invite you to lean into a simple idea: if you love enjoying our rivers and coastal spaces, consider being part of protecting them.

Where to Go + What to Enjoy

This year’s Hit the Decks brings together some of Portsmouth’s favorite waterfront and downtown spots, each offering something a little different to kick off the season.

River House

River House

Set right along the Piscataqua River, River House is a go-to for sweeping water views and relaxed outdoor vibes. For Hit the Decks, they’re going all in with drink and food specials all day, plus open-air seating and an outdoor bar—perfect for settling in and watching the boats drift by.

Water View Grill

If you’re looking to linger, Water View Grill delivers the full experience. Expect live music throughout the day, along with food and drink specials, outdoor seating, and a lively deck scene that captures the spirit of the day.

Portsmouth Gas Light Co.

A downtown staple with multiple levels and rooftop energy, Gas Light is bringing the deals with half-off buckets and half-off burgers. It’s an easy stop whether you’re starting your evening or keeping it going.

Legends Barbecue

For something hearty and satisfying, Legends Barbecue brings bold flavors and comfort food to the mix. It’s a great spot to refuel between deck stops.

Old Ferry Landing

A true waterfront icon, Old Ferry Landing celebrates Opening Day during Hit the Decks. There’s nothing quite like grabbing a seat by the river here—it’s Portsmouth summer, officially begun.

BG’s Boat House

Casual, fun, and right by the water, BG’s is offering $2 off their signature Boathouse Punch along with shareable favorites like fried mozzarella sticks and fried green beans for $9.99. Easy, breezy, and made for gathering with friends.

More Than a Night Out

Events like Hit the Decks remind us why we love this place—the rivers, the harbor, the way water connects everything. But these spaces don’t stay vibrant on their own.

They’re protected, restored, and cared for by conservation groups throughout the region, and by the people who choose to show up for them.

So as you’re out enjoying the decks, consider this your invitation to go one step further:

Because the more we enjoy these places, the more responsibility, and opportunity, we have to protect them.

Start Summer Right

Hit the Decks is about celebration, community, and the simple joy of being outside again. This year, let it also be about connection—to the water, to each other, and to something bigger!
