From its headwaters at Great East Lake in Maine, the Salmon Falls River flows through 19 communities before it joins the Cocheco in New Hampshire. Of the Salmon Falls 15 dams, the furthest downstream creates the head of tide in South Berwick. Communities on both sides of the Maine/New Hampshire border depend on the Salmon Falls for drinking water and year-round recreation.

With its wide diversity of habitats, the Salmon Falls River watershed is home to many native animals, fish, plants, and trees.
